https://prontocare.coGET A SECOND OPINION WITHOUTLEAVING YOUR HOME. Better Healthcare. We are bringing the heart back inmedicine. It is a beautiful story that I would like to share with the world. Hopefully, this will. Specifically, here, I mean the chronic, complicated, and seemunsolvable Healthcare crisis. I have witnessed a lot of devastation to bothmy patients and my fellow physicians. On one hand, patients are sufferingfrom increasingly uncontrollable out-of-pocket expenses as more ( cost isbeing shifted to consumer responsibility) Patients can not afford to eat, support their families because a big chunk of their earnings goes to payfor healthcare bills. This effort has picked up substantially after the World Economic Crisisstarting in 2008 when I knew then that the current Healthcare model isunsustainable, as healthcare cost is breaking the bank and forcing manypeople into bankruptcy. Also, the doctors got hit with denied, delayed, or ridiculous paymentsafter spending more than 38% of their time dealing with Insurancebureaucracy, and paperwork,!Thus I have developed a ( Direct Contracting for Healthcare Model) withcombined Internal Medicine and Cardiology services in incrediblyaffordable pricing with transparency, greatly trusted care andimpeccable credibility which qualified our program to be offered by theCity of Tampa for Non-Medicare Retirees for three consecutive years. THE POWER OFTHE POWER OFEDUCATIONEDUCATION TO END CHILDTO END CHILDMARRIAGEMARRIAGE
PROFILEPOSTMODERN PAINTING. Stella alternately paints in oil and watercolorDECEMBER 2016OUT OF THE GIRLS THAT ARE MARRIED EARLYONLY 13% REMAIN IN SCHOOL. THIS MEANS87% NEVER COMPLETE THEIR EDUCATION.By Chrissy SykesWe need toreduce the ratesof early marriagesand child birthTo put an end to child marriage, we have toeducate parents and communities on theadvantages of educating girls. Education is abasic right for all children.According to UNICEF, there are currently 129million girls out of school.Educating girls creates stronger moreproductive communities and stronger families.Educating the female population increases acountry's productivity and reduces inequality.According to Universal Declaration ofHuman Rights, marriage should only takeplace when there is full and free consent isinvolved. This means that both partieshould be of the age of consent which isover 18 years of age. Early marriages often lead to early childbirth which leads to many healthcomplications for the mother and theinfant.Page 32
What is the differencebetween child marriage, forced marriage andarranged marriage?Child marriage is any formalmarriage or informal unionwhere one or both people areunder 18 years old.A forced marriage is where oneor both people do not consent tothe marriage and pressure orabuse is used. Pressure caninclude threats, physical orsexual violence, and financialpressure. This is different to an arrangedmarriage, where both peoplehave consented to the union butfeel free to refuse if they want to.All child marriages are forced, because a child cannot provideinformed consent, and aretherefore a violation of children'srights.Child marriage also affects boys, but to a lesser degree than girls. In the Central African Republic, the country where boys are mostlikely to be married in childhood, the levels of child marriageamong girls are still more thantwice those seen among boys.*Source https://www.actionaid.org.ukTHE POWER OF EDUCATION TO END CHILD MARRIAGE Let's break thecycle of poveryand endgender baseddiscrimination.Let's havequalityeducation for everyone.Surveys show that child mortality wassignificantly higher among childrenwhose mothers married at an early agethan their counterparts. The prevalence of infant mortalitywithin the first year was 62.56% forchild brides and 37.44% for their oldercounterparts. Access to both quality education and theability to learn skills for the workplaceare critical to breaking the cycle ofpoverty and the intergenerationaltransmission of child marriage. Girls from more educated and wealthierhouseholds are less likely to marry inchildhood. Page 33

I have been working with Denis Okuru from the CENTRE FOR CHILDREN AND LIBRARY FOUNDATIONsince he started building this centre 4 years ago. I have watched him personally make the bricks tostart this building and painstakingly keep pushing over the years till the library is now open. We areproud the GGA Foundation has made a contribution to the chairs and tables for this building wherethe children will also be learning the My Body Is My Body Programme.Denis recently received a donation of 47 boxes of books which you can see have all been organisedinto the library and they have also received a donation of solar energy so that he can also use hiscomputer to run the library. Well done Denis Okuru and team for making such a difference to yourcommunity.

The Dzaleka Refugee Camp is located about 25 miles north of the capital Lilongwe. It is thelargest in Malawi and was established in 1994. It is home to more than 50,000 refugees andasylum seekers from five different countries, although it was originally designed toaccommodate 10,000 people.A presentation of the My Body is My Body Course “Introduction To Child Maltreatmentand Safeguarding Children” was presented to 80 teen mothers. This training wasdemanded after the training that was done last month. Most single moms found it usefuland requested that the training be extended. The mothers also requested that this training should be held at least twice a year since most ofthese single mothers or teen mothers are inexperienced in child upbringing. The training wassingle-handled by the teen mothers who participated in the first training session. Well done to all who participated.by GGA Ambassador Prince Lokendo.MalawiMalawiPage 44
There are many stages in our life that change the direction of our living. Becoming a parent issuch an important turning point in our lives. Parenthood changes both the way we live and theway we think. When our daughter came into our lives, my wife and my life began to take a turnfor the better. When we adopted her, she was only four months old. When we decided to adopta child, we registered with CARA (Central Adoption Resource Authority-Nodal Agency forAdoption in India) as per law. After two and a half years of waiting, we were informed that wewere having a baby girl. We immediately completed all legal procedures. Our daughter isextremely happy and energetic, but she was abandoned in the forest by her biological parents. There she was bitten by ants and insects and also got bacterial infections. She was saved due tothe alertness of the ‘Emergency Service Ambulance’ and its crew. However, the treating doctorssuspected that she might have kidney disease in future and our anxiety grew further. Howcould such a small baby bear such severe pain was disturbing. Fortunately, our daughter ishealthy and has no illness. The reason for deliberately giving this personal experience is to draweveryone’s attention to the issue of orphaned or abandoned children. No Person Shall Be Deprived of His/HerRight to Life or Personal LibertyIt is estimated that there 153 million children (29.6 million in India only) worldwide are orphansor abandoned (UNICEF). If the world’s orphans or abandoned were a country of their own, theirpopulation would be bigger than that of countries like Russia, Mexico or Japan. Approximately7.5 million were orphaned by Covid-19 (WHO), three fourth in Southeast Asia (40.6%) and Africa(24.3%). When any child gets abandoned (a majority immediately after birth), they are thrown inan inhumane manner – thrash, garbage, bushes, waste bins, roadside, etc.By Vidyadhar PrabhudesaiPage 39
The newborns who were thrown awaywere barely covered. They are exposedto extreme temperatures, rains, insectbites, injuries etc. This impacts theiroverall health and wellbeing until theyreceive help. 2.7 million children dieevery year in the first month of life(WHO). According to of UNHCR, this isan act violation of the fundamentalright i.e. “All human beings are bornfree and equal in dignity and rights”(Article 1) and “Everyone has the rightto life, liberty and security of person(Article 4). This directly impacts one ofthe global peace indexes pillars i.e.,“Acceptance of the Right of Others.”This right ensures better harmony andpeace in a country. Nations withbetter peace and harmony enforceformal laws that guarantee basichuman rights and freedoms and theinformal social and cultural normsthat relate to behaviors of citizens. The journey of orphaned or abandonedchildren, from the day they are found to theday they are placed in an adoptive home, is along and rigorous one. Every country has theirown laws for adoption and agencies tomonitor the whole process. Hence the rate ofadoption differs from country to country.Among QUAD nations, the USA has higheradoption rate about 100,000 every year, followed by Japan around 80,000 every yearwhile its abysmally low in India 3,000-4,000per year. The low rate of adoption in India isdue to the existing adoption laws. The processitself moves at glacial pace. Currently in India, only if there is no family to take care of anorphaned child or a child has beenabandoned, the government steps in. Onlyabandoned children, who cannot be cared forby extended family, can be adopted bystrangers unlike in USA where it is more liberalencourages open adoption. In Japan, childrenunder age of six can be adopted directly fromthe hospital itself. No Person Shall Be Deprived of His/HerRight to Life or Personal LibertyPage 40
Smaller nations like Haiti launched "WaitingChild Program" to match parents willing to takeon older children, siblings, or special needschildren. This is a paradoxical situation whereon one hand there are a large number ofparents willing to adopt a child globally, on theother there are large number are furtherabandoned or orphaned.Child care institutions (CCI) across the world areauthorized to accept orphaned and abandonedchildren, and have placed cradles, cribs, babyhatches etc. so that people can safely put thechild there. However, it is very sad that peopledo not keep their children in such a safeenvironment. There are possible reasons likethere could be no awareness of cradle points,CCTV around, somebody would see them, fearof getting caught by police etc. and hence theyprefer the inhuman way rather thanvolunteering safe handing over. If people atleast know where they are, there is an increasedprobability of the unwanted child reaching thedesired CCI rather than being disposed of ininhumane ways. Hence it is important to makecradle signage mandatory for hospitals, adoption agencies, orphanages, foster carehomes, children’s daycares etc. This signage issimilar to the signage of a hospital or pharmacystore which is visible from a distance 24/7 and365 days. It should be promoted actively by thegovernment machinery so that even if peoplewant to abandon their kids, they drop them atleast to a place where they could receive basicprimary care. Moreover, such incidents aremainly found on highways, roadways, forestareas outside city limits etc. I also think that acradle sign should also be included as part ofRoad Safety Information Signs. This sign issimilar to a petrol bunk, food court or even toiletfacility indicating the proximity or distance anddirection to the same. With my campaign “MakeCradle Signage Mandatory”,
India recently has become the first countryglobally to make cradle signage mandatory.Apart from these, it is also important to have an“Open Adoption Policy” provision forvolunteering and handing over to governmentagencies. Governments can also offer somerelaxation or benefits to the abandoningfamilies to encourage the use of cradles, cribs orhatches. They should do counselling to avoidabandoning, ensure privacy if they comeforward, give financial support if they are unableto financially care for the child etc. Counselling can be mandated for families ifdoctors know that the family has had girls inprevious childbirths. This is a step towardsimproving peace and harmony. It is a measurewhile enabling a well-functioning governmentto deliver high-quality public and civil services, trust and participation from citizens to upholdthe rule of law. These are small steps taken to secure thefuture of our children and I am looking forsuggestions from all Global GoodwillAmbassadors to strengthen the systemfurther.About the author:Vidyadhar Prabhudesai is the ExecutiveDirector and Board Member of theInternational Foundation for Sustainable,Peace and Development, a per-eminentinternational institution based in Europe. All roads led to Smile Community Centre. A family-operated children’s home based in KayoleSlums, Nairobi, Kenya, has opened its doors to 40 orphans and vulnerable children. This was not the first time we visited this orphanage, but the second our previous visit prompted us to come and share a meal with the beautiful kids. Our goal this time around was to provide sexual and menstrual education to teenagers. We splitinto two gender-based groups, and our team of male volunteers took the boys through sexualeducation as the lady volunteers introduced menstrual and sexual education to the girls. Weintend to do follow-up educational sessions with the groups to provide them all the tools theyrequire to survive as adults. The small kids were not left without a few games here and there as we also taught them the MBIMBprogram which they seemed to enjoy the most because of all the fun songs involved. We gave the femaleteenagers menstrual care packages and donated personal care items to the orphanage. It was a pleasuresharing a meal with the kids as well and we can’t wait to return again. Page 46
As part of our mission to complement the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals (4, 5 and1), EYES- SL established a social-technical institute, where out-of-school youth and girls can haveaccess to three years of insensitive vocational training in various entrepreneurship skills areas:Hotel Management, Hairdressing, Tailoring and Metal Work. The institution was established to help vulnerable young people who do not have access to formaleducation or who drop out of school to move into the same space as young people with formaleducation while motivating many youths with formal education to also access the centre and enrolsince we believed that these vocational skills will contribute to providing 1000 jobs for youngpeople by 2025. As a social-technical institute, we do ask our students to pay a development fee of $14, however, wemotivate them to access the training for free, while trying to contribute to the development of theinstitution. Currently, have challenges with tools and equipment to keep these vulnerable girls learning andbuilding their future which will also motivate them to help others. MEMORIES OF OUR QUEENMEMORIES OF OUR QUEENELIZABETH 11ELIZABETH 11 Queen Elizabeth 11 at Badminton horse trials21st April 1926 - 8th September 2022
I first saw the Queen back in the 60’s when only a little girl living ina small village. She stopped at the train station, was greeted bythe villagers and then drove away to the Slimbridge Wild Fowltrust. I ran behind the huge car waving and shouting “God save theQueen!” (I never dreamt I would later represent her lieutenancy.) Isaw her later at Badminton Horse Trials, The Cheltenham Racesand various other events. So many of us have our stories to tell….awards, garden parties, local visits and representations. Mybrother-in-law received his CBE, my sister was honoured with theQueen’s Jubilee medal, my nephew met her in his role as an MPand my son was called to the palace and received in audiencewhen he was appointed as the first Ambassador of the IslamicRepublic of Mauritania. I am proud to have been appointed by hermajesty as Deputy Lieutenant of Gloucestershire. Today weattended Gloucester Cathedral where the bells rang 96 chimesand we paid our tributes and signed the condolence book insidethe magnificent building. We then moved on to Shire Hall wheredignitaries met for 2 minutes silence and another book signing.Isn’t it amazing that one diminutive woman can have impactedon so many across the world? How on earth did she manage to getaround seeing so many of us, opening events, celebrating, commiserating, commemorating and just “always being around”!What a role model for strong women warriors! She offered her whole life to her country and her people. She wasthe essence of discipline, duty, dedication and devotion. Inseventy years, she hardly put a foot wrong and she was theepitome of an upright, caring human being. She also displayed adelightful sense of humour with her James Bond skit for theOlympics and more recently, the brilliant Paddington Bear scenewhere she brought out marmalade sandwiches from herhandbag! You don’t have to be a royalist to acknowledge the life of thisextraordinary human. HOPE AMBASSADORSMENSTRUAL HYGIENE EDUCATION CAMPAIGNHope Ambassadors Team in Ekiti visited ST. Michael Secondary School, Ifaki Ekiti, to educate young girls on Menstrual Hygiene andTeenage Sex Education. There are so many myths around these subjects, and it is through sensitization that we can help educateand bring awareness to critical issues.The. young girls were taught how to calculate their menstrual cycle, keeping records to get their average cycle, the difference inflows which could be caused by various factors, and what to do when unusual things happen during menstruation. It was educative, informative, and interactive as they asked mindbogglingly questions.Inflation also impacts sanitary pads, as it gets more expensive daily. It becomes unaffordable for these young girls, resulting in usingsubstandard alternatives, which in the long run may lead to serious health effects.Through this program, we were able to introduce and distribute reusable sanitary pads that could serve them for months. It was a new experience for them as they had not come across such an alternative before our program. The team elaborated on howthey should care for the reusable pads so these would benefit them and also save money. We give kudos to Damola Omotayo Agbelade, who led theteam and delivered this sensitization program. Our team at Hope Ambassadors is proud of you and whatyou are doing to impact the lives of children and youngsters. Reviving the hope in HopePage 58

With a dream of a better and more beautiful future for our country, India, we stepped forward in the wide area ofeducation. We planted a seed and named it “Scope for Change” with a mission to impart quality education and valuesto underprivileged children. Yes, you heard it right! The underprivileged can only dream of such an education. Ourinitiative, ‘Hamein Padhao, Hamein Badhao’ has been working in this direction since the pandemic times. The main objective of this program is the holistic development of innocent children belonging to underprivilegedcommunities. Society is not very happy to accept them, and thus we wish to make them efficient and able enough tomake a mark. Our project supports the UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG-4), which aims to “ensure inclusive and equitablequality education." Moreover, it promotes lifelong learning opportunities for all. " SFC Learning Centers provide aplatform for children where they can exhibit their extraordinary abilities. SFC is open to collaboration with enthusiasticvolunteers to participate in our learning programs and have a different experience, spending time with our kids. Trulyspeaking, it is all in all a delightful episode for them once they spend quality time talking about knowledge sharing andlife skills. Volunteers observe ‘a sense of giving', which makes them feel a different level of contentment in themselves. Our focus is to educate children from the age group of 5 to 16 years, in particular. From the strata they belong to, if anyolder teenager also enrolls with us, we find ourselves proud to teach them. Age is not our basic criterion, but to impartknowledge to the needy and empower them and make them future-ready is our mission. A typical day at SFC learning center is not about academics. Still, we want these "not so fortunate”, kids to exploreknowledge in the areas of English speaking, computer education, gender equality, environmental awareness, art &crafts like clay molding, making with ice cream sticks, collage making, paper craft, craft with waste materials, etc., mentalwell-being, health & hygiene. Thus, making it easier to bring out the hidden talents of poor children. Besides, our primary focus at the learning center ifeels great when you see these children enjoying motivational videos, maybe about good habits on YouTube in theirwell-equipped smart class. Their classroom has not only become their second home where they learn through moderntechnologies but a fun place to enjoy with their teachers and friends. Our team of change-makers is always there to check on your feedback so that we can design new programs in thefuture. Page 67Save The Young Girls FoundationMy name is Susan Marie Sesay, the founder anddirector of Save the Young Girls Foundation Orphanagein Sierra Leone. We help young girls who have lost their parents to theEbola epidemic in 2014 and other diseases. We also have a few children in our care who are lessprivileged than those we rescued from the slumcommunity in Freetown. In 2018 we decided to move these children from theslum community to give the children better livingconditions and also send them to school. We alsoprovide three meals a day and teach them tailoringskills to become self-reliant when they grow up.A few years ago, with the help of our dear friends, wewere able to purchase some land and start building thenew orphanage home, which we find will lessen ourexpenses in terms of rent. Building this orphanage home means a lot for ourorganization as we will have a permanent structure anda building that will last for a long time; even when wehave passed away, it can be a lifetime legacy. That is why we decided to make this building strongwith solid blocks. The girls are doing wonderfully and are headed back to school. This year the girls made theirown uniforms due to their excellent sewing skills. It's good we can empower our youngergeneration to be self-reliant through different skills. For the past years, we spent money tosew their uniforms. This time the kids requested they want to sew their uniforms, and theyhave done marvelous work.Page 68

Susan Marie Sesay'sMotivation Behind Starting the Orphanage;Save the Young GirlsFoundationI went to school in a society that cared less about theeducation of female children. The reason is that thesociety of Borongoh Makarankay is primarilychauvinistic in outlook. In 1998 I attended the Roman Catholic primary schooland later came to Freetown, where I was enrolled at theAhmadiyya secondary school in 2004.In my village FGM, it is said to be a custom that everygirl at the age of five upward would inevitably gothrough. Early child marriage and teenage pregnancyare also said to be common factors in my village. It isalso evident for girls who underwent this elaboratefemale genital mutilation (FGM) would be presented tothe chief to select the most beautiful one amongst themto marry. I am one of the few girls that had the opportunity to goto school at the village of Borrongoh MakarankayHowever, when it was time that I and some other girlsbe initiated into the secret society through FGM, I and afew others flew and left for Freetown, the capital city ofSierra Leone. By: Susan Marie SesayFounder: Save the Young Girls FoundationGGAF - Sierra LeoneWhy I Help Young GirlsIn Freetown, I went to an aunt whose residence Icould remember from a holiday trip five years before. My aunt took me in. At my aunt’s place, I wasresponsible for almost all the household choresbefore I could manage to go to school later in theafternoon. At least I appreciate the fact that I wasgoing to school knowing full well how importanteducation would turn out to be in my life. Despitethe ill treatment I underwent at the hands of my aunt,I endured all of those, and I was very resilient in thefight against FGM, teenage pregnancy, rape, parental neglect, and child labor. My decision to set up a foundation to support girlchildren was not uncommon due to what I wentthrough and considering the fact that girls diedwhen they went through initiation, as well as duringlabor giving birth at such a tender age.Page 70
It takes a very special grace of God to run anorphanage in Sierra Leone as we facechallenges during these difficult times. With a start with the challenges facing runningan orphanage is difficult to run in a country thatis among the poorest nations in the worldwhere prices of food increase rapidly. Shelter is one big problem we face. We areworking to ensure that we can provide apermanent solution to end this struggle. Wewant to ensure that we can leave a strong andreliable home for these kids even when we passaway. We need more support to help uscomplete the building. Food is a big challenge that we face. Moving to the rural area will help us startplanting some of our own crops to help us withfood.Few of the support we receive doesn't comefrom the government. It's from generous peoplelike the Global Goodwill AmbassadorsFoundation and other friends that help usreach the need of these kids.ChallengesSTYGF Sends a "Thank you" to GlobalGoodwill Ambassadors Foundation andall supporters.Page 71

Failure is not falling down, but refusingto get up... Chinese ProverbAt a recent education summit held by the PEAFoundation at the Ojokoro Community Library in Lagos, themed “It takes a village to raise a child” I overheard ateen, perhaps not more than 18 years old ask thisquestion that no one answered. Perhaps we were allafraid to contemplate the answer. Perhaps we wereashamed of what we would find if we examined thequestion too closely. After all, it is an African saying that ittakes a village to raise a child. If the child fails, does thatmean the village has failed? Is it the child’s failure, his parents’ failure, his teachers’/school’sfailure, his community’s, or his nation’s failure? There is aNigerian adage that blames the mother for a child’s failure andhonors the father for his success. Is it the mother’s fault when achild fails?I remember all too vividly when I had to redo my secondyear in university because I failed 2 out of 5 courses.Never mind that there was a whole host of craziness thatoccurred; a strike that paralyzed teaching, so we did notcomplete the syllabus, closure of the university for anindefinite period, inability to collect my books andbelongings before the forced closure, recall and Icommunity of Abonnema also responsible? I remember how devastated my third son was years agoat one of his many inter-house sports competitions. Infront of the whole school and guests, he came 5thplace in a race that he had practiced for weeks. Hecame to me with tears, lamenting that he had failed hishouse members, his house prefect, his games master, his family, and his friends. He had two more races torun, the relays, 4 by 100 and 4 by 400 but he wanted topull out because he had failed, someone in his housecalled him a loser and he didn’t want to run anymore. Itold him I was not there to watch him win, I was onlythere to see him participate and have a great timedoing that. Knowing he could win, I told him to calmdown, say a prayer, and that I loved him from before hewas born, so 2 stupid races meant nothing to me. Hedecided to still participate and ran, and ended upwinning two gold medals for his house in both racesDid I fail him earlier? What Happens When a Child Fails? What Happens When a Child Fails? What Happens When a Child Fails? What Happens When a Child Fails?Every year when the West African ExaminationCouncil releases the results of the WAECexamination with a 60% failure rate, who reallyhas failed? WAEC? The Education Ministry? TheSchools Management? The Government? Thestudents? Their Parents? The Mothers of thestudents? The Nation as a whole?Page 79
At a visitation of the La Roche Leadership Foundation toone of the Special Correction Centres for At Risk Childrena few years ago, I remember seeing the Ikoyi Prisons buspull up with some very young offenders, whodisembarked to start a long journey of rehabilitation. Whofailed? Was it the child offenders? Was it the ‘Uncle’ or‘Aunty’ who brought them from the village to have abetter life in Lagos that failed? Was it the governmentwho picked them up from the streets as they hawked‘everything and the kitchen sink’ that failed? Was it theirvillage mothers that let them leave the village who failed?I wish I had found the teenager at Ojokoro who asked thatquestion. I would have told her just three of the things that myfather told me about failing: first; that I had just created anopportunity for my greatest success; second;, that I hadn’tfailed but merely gained a useful piece of experience thatwould help me in future, and third; that this experience wouldmake me a more compassionate, accepting and humaneperson,What happens when a child fails? If a child fails becausethe adults in their life fail, then they deserve an apology,an explanation, and another chance. If a child failsbecause of their fault, they deserve encouragement, love, and another chance. Either way, the failure of achild should cause the adults in their lives to spring intoaction. Voice of the Girl Child and Vulnerable People Foundationdistributed educational materials to three communityschools to support Girl Child Education in NorthernNigeria. Over 100 children benefited from the project. Wealso engage the children on safety tips due to high rate ofinsecurity in the region. Currently in Nigeria, there are 18.5 million out of schoolchildren, 60% of these out of school children are girls, thatis over 10 million girls are out of school. Unfortunately, themajority of these out of school children are actually fromNorthern Nigeria. - (According to The UNICEF Cheif FieldOffice in Kano). He pleaded with me to return the next day. On return, I was ushered to evaluate two male and female patients. They were both chronic, but the female was the more agonizing. She was suffering from botched buttockenhancement surgery performed by a quack. The two buttocks had ruptured, and each sore was the size of a fist. After treatment, the patient held my hands and prayed for me, citing my tenderness and care while the hospitalMatron yelled, “MD, she is good!”. The MD was impressed and asked me to develop a care plan for this femalepatient. So, what began as a chance meeting, became my twice-a-year volunteer event at the hospital for thenext three years. I was later included as a volunteer in the hospital’s virtual wound treatment team and received aLetter of Appreciation from the State Government. As a well-known Government Hospital, the quality and availability of wound supplies and the staff'sprofessionalism were shockingly low. The next day, while on a call with a friend in another city, over 300 miles away, She informed me that she hadrecently discovered that the owner of the provision store she frequented had a chronic sore on her leg. Due tonegative social stigma, she always wore her clothing down to her feet to hide her affliction. My friend, acommunity organizer appealed to me to see her but cautioned that the woman is hesitant. True to the description, Mama Mini* was reluctant to see me for fear of exposing her condition to a stranger.Seeing our persistence, she gave up but repeated several times that even the hospital treatment team hadconcluded that her problem was spiritual, meaning that her ulcer/sore could not be cured. So, she stoppedseeking medical treatment.By: Nurse JoyceGGAF - USAIn The Beginning; Empathy. In 2014, empathy drew me to do something afterwitnessing the plight of individuals suffering fromchronic sores/ulcers in two unrelated chanceevents. Cancer ranks as the second cause of death in the US after Heart Disease. It is mostly preventable. Many studieshave established evidence that fresh fruits and vegetables can prevent various cancers because of their anti-oxidants, such as carotenoids.Certain plants, such as (Broccoli and Cauliflower) can enhance programmed cell death (Apoptosis) of pre-malignant and malignant cells, similar to the effect of intermittent fasting Broochli Sprouts are an exceptionallyrich source of enzymes that protect against chemical carcinogens (cancer-causing substances).Avoiding artificial flavors are such as benzophenone, ethyl acrylate, methyl ether, myrcene, pulegone, andpyridine, which were used to lend flavors like cinnamon and mint to food items. National Resources DefenseCouncil was one of the groups that brought the petition to the FDA in 2015, which led to the banning of thosecarcinogenic flavors in October 2018. This was great news for millions of Americans who unknowinglysnacked on cancer-causing chemicals for far too long.An unbalanced diet can lead to causing cancers similar to smoking and alcohol abuse. Low intake of fruits andvegetables especially noted in the food deserts, was found to have an association with a high incidence ofcancer in more than 200 epidemiological studies. These included stomach, colon, rectum, bladder, cervix, ovaries, and pancreatic cancers. Daily intake of five servings of fruits and vegetables was associated with a lowincidence of these cancers. Fresh Fruits and vegetable consumption was found to be lowest among the poor, and African Americans especially noted in the food deserts. When this population increases their intake of fruits and vegetables, there is a lower risk not only for cancer butalso for heart disease and brain dysfunction. Folic acid deficiency and Vitamin B12 deficiency were associatedwith an increased risk for colon cancer by causing chromosome breakdown leading to cancer. Metabolismleads to oxidant by-products causing damage to DNA protein, thus causing cancer. Antioxidants in fruits andvegetables protect against this damage. Only 9% of Americans eat their recommended five servings of fruitsand vegetables daily!Ascorbate is the most effective antioxidant in the human plasma that protects against oxidative stress, whichleads to cancer and chronic degenerative diseases. Obesity increases the risk of colon and breast cancers.Alcohol causes cancer of the oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus (food pipe connecting the mouth to thestomach), liver, and pancreatic cancer, and thus alcohol intake should be minimized. Smoking causes similarcancers to alcohol, with the addition of Lung cancer being the second most common type of lethal cancer inthe US. A significant 30% of cancer deaths in the US are related to Tobacco. Risk is high for active and passivesmokers as well.October: National BreastCancer Awareness MonthPage 87
Processed meat and fried food consumption increase the risk of colon cancer. Food and drinks should not beconsumed while scalding hot as they can cause mouth cancer. Physical activity reduces the risk of colon andbreast cancer.Early preventative screening for Human Papilloma Virus HPV which is the main cause of cervical cancer, withregular PAP smears as well as screening for breast cancer with mammograms, screening for colon cancers, especially for a high-risk group with a positive family history of colon cancer or precancerous lesions. Similarly, screening men above age 45 for Prostatic cancer with a simple blood test PSA (Prostatic Specific Antigen)would lead to early diagnosis and successful treatment before metastasis( or spread of cancer to other organstakes place, leading to poor outcomes and high mortality).High consumption of deep-fried food was found to be associated with a high incidence of Prostatic Cancer.Fried food was also linked to an increased risk of laryngeal cancers in Switzerland and Italy and breast cancer.Avoid exposure to toxic environmental factors contaminating food or water, or air, as this would also lead tocancer. It is important to report any concerning symptoms, such as changes in bowel habits and progressiveconstipation in the case of colon cancer for example. Unexplained weight loss, poor appetite, and early satietybe suspicious of Stomach cancer. Detection of lumps on breast self-exam with or without bleeding ordischarge should not be ignored. Also, improving the socio-economic factors to improve nutrition with anintake of 5 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables, which should be washed with clean water beforeconsumption to remove any residues of pesticides used that are carcinogenic!Take home messages, early detection, regular screening, increased physical activity, avoiding fried food, smoking, and excess alcohol. Educating the public about these facts, along with five daily servings of fruitsand vegetable intake will save most of the $96 Billions spent annually on cancer treatment. These cost-effective measures will not only save thousands of lives but also yield an incredible Rate of Return(ROI) on theInvestment made to prevent cancer.Dr. Adel Eldin, MD, FACC, FACP, MBA, GGAPage 89
The Importance of RainforestsBy: Dario RuggieroGGA Italy and Europe Chair; Long Term Economy Founderwww.lteconomy.orgThis article is part of the special program “Teaching about SDGs, sustainability and Long Term Economy for your community”What is a rainforest?Rainforests are characterized by a closed and continuous tree canopy, high humidity, the presence ofmoisture-dependent vegetation, a moist layer of leaf litter, the presence of epiphytes and lianas, and theabsence of wildfire. The largest areas of rainforest are tropical or temperate rainforests. Tropical rainforests arecharacterized by a warm and wet climate with no substantial dry season: typically found within 10 degreesnorth and south of the equator. Tropical rainforests exist in Southeast Asia (from Myanmar (Burma)) to thePhilippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Sri Lanka; also in Sub-Saharan Africa from Cameroonto the Congo (Congo Rainforest), South America (e.g. the Amazon rainforest), Central America, Australia, andon Pacific Islands (such as Hawaiʻi).Locations of tropical rainforests in the world.Source: NASA Earth ObservatoryWhy are rainforests important? One of the most important and widely known reasons for protecting rainforests is their contribution toreducing CO2 concentration in the atmosphere and their function in regulating Climate all around theworld. But it is not only about that! Rainforests are a world by themselves. They are the home for more thanhalf of the world's species of plants and animals. They have most of the oldest trees and vegetation in theworld. They are a treasure of knowledge. We can learn from it. It can teach us about the secret of life and ofthe universe. It can teach us how to be resilient. Janine Benyus (author of “Biomimicry: Innovation Inspiredby Nature”), in an interview with Long Term Economy representatives, described Nature as the “wisestteacher” we can have.Page 89
“What happens if we start seeing Nature as a teacher or a mentor rather than as a warehouse of goods?Nature is the wisest teacher we could have”Janine Benyus Janine Benyus: Author of “Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature”www.lteconomy.it/en/topic-interviews-en/interviste/janine-benyus-biomimicry Rainforests and SDGsA good observer knows that every matter on earth is related with different levels of depth to all SDGs.However, there are some SDGs that are more related to one specific topic. Rainforests are more specificallylinked to the so-called ecological SDGs (11, 12, 13, 14, 15). So if you are a company or an NGO that isworking on Rainforest preservation, do not forget that. You are contributing to those SDGs. It’s time forcompanies to reduce the exploitation of rainforests and for consumers to reward these kinds of companies. Brought in a Bullock Cart on the muddy path through fields! From her parent's home along eight miles of the route to her in-law's village after the wedding ceremony! So the people told me as a child! Uneducated, unemployed no bank balance, no flats! Only a few minimal traditional dowry items- gold and clothes in a big iron sheet box! She was young, hardworking skilled in cooking, cleaning and tethering the animals including their milking! Toiled hard with the practical knowledge of sewing, weaving, knitting and unlimited capacity of hard labor without any formal training course or certificate! But no computing, driving or cycling with zero awareness of outside geography! Starting in a two-room set on the first floor and a water well under the stairs and cattle around, she did every possible household work to run, operate and manage so well! Soon became a household name for stitching clothes, empowering young girls in cooking, sewing, and knitting skills with her sweet and helping nature. Shoulder-to-shoulder with her husband, my father, in farming, cutting and mixing fodder for the cattle! Attending relatives and earning meager money from cloth making by accepting the labor charges in kind like grains, vegetables, and jaggery from women folks of the farming community! She witnessed the pleasure of mothering, marrying, and childbearing by herself and then her near ones afterward. With the pain of delivery and a few deaths, her family expanded from six children to now grown-up fathers, mothers, sisters, and even great-grandchildren touching to around twenty-five at the fag end of her life! This mother of mine-Gurnam Kaur, an epitome of honesty, integrity, compassion, empowerment and brave, open-heart alms-giver, participated and watched the parallel growth of her husband's occupation as a blacksmith and now the business of bigproportions for the best advantages of the local community by employment, empowerment, financial help, andrelationship building- popular as Balkar Family! Words fall much less short to free images rural women's empowerment We called her 'bebe' (mother in Punjabi) , finally left us forever on May twenty twenty-twenty! My head bows, tears fall, and my heart sinks! May you rest in peace, Mother!A Tribute By Dr. Labh Singh GGAF - India In the Name of Women's EmpowermentPage 96
