How have children been affected bythe Covid Pandemicby Chrissy Sykes

Page 17

According to UNESCO, one year into the COVID-19 pandemic, close tohalf the world's students are still affected by partial or completeschool closures. Over 100 million additional children will fall belowthe minimum proficiency level in reading due to the health crisis.Today, two-thirds of the world's student population is still affected by complete orpartial school closures. In 29 countries, schools remain fully closed.Children around the world that are lucky enough to have internet in their homes havebeen able to carry on with some of their studies. However, even this has not beeneasy because if they have access to the internet, the child/children may not have acomputer or tablet to do their work. It has also caused problems if there is more thanone child in the home, making it difficult for large families to share the facilities.Two-thirds of the world's school-age children – or 1.3 billion children aged 3 to 17years old – do not have internet connection in their homes.*Source UnicefPage 17

50% of the world's school-age children do not have access to a computer at home1.3 Billion children do not have an internet connection in their homes.Making all the excellent free resources available to parents and children redundant inthese areas, and leaving the children at a distinct disadvantage.According to the world bank this lack of education will lead to increased drop out ratesand an estimated $10 trillion in loss of earnings. How have young Girls been affected?The above statistics have increased the effect on young girls, with more than 130 millionout of school today. Twenty million more girls may never return to school once theCOVID-19 crisis subsides.* Source Malala FoundationYoung girls have had to take on increased duties in the family, such as caring for theelderly and family members that are ill. They may have also had to care for siblings thatare out of school.There has also been increased gender-based violence where girlshave been at a greater risk of exploitation, violence and child labour.

Page 19

How have young girls education been affected? There are 3.7 million out-of-school children in Afghanistan — 60% are girls. (UNICEF) Brazil is the world's eighth largest economy — but 1.5 million girls are still out of school.BRAZIL (malala.org) 47% of Ethiopian girls who start grade one do not make it to grade five. (UNICEF) 1 in 3 girls in India complete secondary education. (UNESCO Institute for Statistics) Almost one out of three school-age children in Lebanon are Syrianrefugees. (MEHE) Girls make up 60% of all out-of-school children in Nigeria at primarylevel. (UNESCO) We have to make sure that our governments make provision for all children to return to school safely, and that each and every child hasa right to an education. Let us support all our NGO’s and community groups that look after thehealth, safety and education of our children in this world.

Even though this has not been a focus in the past, everyone continues to remainexcited to use the tools and skills that they learned. HOW TO TRANSFORM DISABILITY INTO NEW ABILITY: A CHARITY DONATIONCASE STUDY"Regardless of all the struggles, Charity DonationFoundation is facing the odds and including People withDisabilities in its 2021 Foundation vision and in itsbroader vision for Lebanon"The expression, "Persons with Disabilities" (PWD) refers to all people with special needs, including those who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual, or cognitiveimpairment. They are regarded as being among the world's most marginalizedpopulations. They are also deemed as having poorer mental health, lower educationalattainment & economic involvement, with higher poverty rates than people withoutdisabilities. Over one billion people around the world are “disabled.”By: Terry Bitar , Founder at Charity DonationGGA - USA

Page 53

Within Charity Donation's 2021 vision, the Foundation adopted the initiative toencourage PWD to engage in professional life by offering them job opportunities. To achieve that end, the Foundation launched its first conference, “How to transformDisability into new Ability” on February 15th, 2021, aimed at breaking the barriers thatkeep people with disabilities bound to a lack of professional opportunities by introducingand offering inclusive employment. At the conclusion of the conference, Charity Donationlaunched job opportunities dedicated to PWD that are amenable to their conditions andwhich offer the necessary accessibility needed to perform the job function withoutcausing a strain on them but instead harnessing the merits of their contributions. As a way to show its support and its solidarity to peoplewith disabilities, the Foundation employed its firstyoung lady that has a walking impairment, whileintroducing a customised job that is prescribed to thisemployees’ condition. With this stand in solidarity, Nourbecame the first fully remote Charity Donationemployee, managing all of the Foundations’ socialmedia platforms. This new experience was enjoyable, flexible, and offered the Foundation the opportunityto empower someone who on the surface is disabled but is just as capable. While asking Nour about her experience, she expressed: "Even if having a disabilitymakes me less capable of performing some activities, with Charity Donation nothing isimpossible. I am able to do all my tasks remotely from home. I am very comfortable andthe work is very flexible with my condition that may sometimes hinder my physicalability. I am happy and proud to be a part of this Foundation, and thankful to be giventhis accommodation and opportunity to prove myself, and to show that I am not disabled, just differently-abled. A very special thanks to Ms. Bitar and to the Charity DonationFoundation.”Nour Ramadan,Nour Ramadan,Nour Ramadan, Head of Social Media atHead of Social Media atHead of Social Media at Charity Donation FoundationCharity Donation FoundationCharity Donation Foundation

Anxiety in our students can have origins in many places. It can be incredibly hard to spot as our studentsbecome masters of disguise, but for those lucky enough to be able to see the signs, there’s a lot we can do tohelp!1. Acknowledge - talk about the things that cause the fear, it’s real for them.2. Reassure - let them know that’s it’s ok to feel scared, nervous and anxious. Let them know that you knowhow they feel.3. Explain - explain what anxiety is. Describe what happens to our bodies when anxiety shows up. Allow themto recognize the signs.4. Help - paint a picture of the unknown in the mind of the child. The unpredictable can be the most dauntingthing of all.5. Avoid - never label a child as anxious or shy. Stigma has no place in the world if the child.6. Try - try not to be overprotective or anxious yourself. Model the behavior you wish to view in your child. ‘It’sok, I’m here with you.’The unknown world can cause anxiety in even the most worldly of adults, let alone our youngest citizens. Ourtask is to bring the unpredictable to the feet of our children, allowing them to explore it in their own time.‘You can’t force a seed to grow, it will blossom when the conditions are just right.Gavin McCormackTips on Working With Students Who AlsoSuffer from Anxietywww.gavinmccormack.com.au

In 2011, looking in the eyes of his little nephews, Dario asked himself what the world of thefuture would have been like. The answer was clear: he understood that the current economicmodel, and, more in general, the way society is organized are dangerous for the planet andcould bring to reduced wellness in the future, or even catastrophic events. It was at that timethat Dario initiated what he calls Long Term Economy. But what does that mean? The logic isthis: the current economic model is almost totally focused on creating value in the short term,it is focused on short-term assets (Profit). Long Term Economy is focused on long-term assets, that is Nature, Culture, and Societal stability. Moving from a short-term perspective to a long-term one is essential to become sustainable. As long as your view is focused on creating valuein the short term, you will look for profit even though by doing that you will destroy the planet.Long Term Economy is something that can be used at a local level: they are local communitiesthe ones that could better take care of their land and of what brings value in the long term.

Page 73

Now Dario is running several projects with LongTerm Economy. Among the most important ones, there is an e-learning platform with courses onlong-term sustainability (the latest one is on SDGs)- https://elearning.lteconomy.it/. Anotherimportant project is “MyPlanetFirst”, born as afilm, which is to become a multimedia platformwhere people can share content related tosustainability. The film is based on a series ofinterviews with some of the most importantchange makers in the world. Teenagers and youngwill soon be invited to create their own contentbased on their talent (soon calls for action will belaunched). https://myplanetfirst.org/

In a world of social distance where a hug was rarely knownWe learnt to find alternatives to help us cope at home.We shared our local walking and our bikes came out from shedsWe learnt to make embroideries and weave in coloured threads.Lost hobbies were discovered and we suddenly found timeTo watch our favourite programmes with a glass of rosé wine.We shared our family recipes and loaned a much-loved bookAppreciating nature; we finally learnt to look. This month we have a list of tens to give you some ideasOf all the things you’d like to do; we’ll make it very clearWith country strolls and birds to see; there’s much to bring a smileSo, join us in “ten types of things” and go that extra mile.It might be films; it could be sport or even tasty foodWhatever takes your fancy and promotes a happy mood.Ten poems that have touched you, ten animals you’ve seenJust tell us things you have enjoyed and show us where you’ve been. Its always good to share the stuff that others recommendIt gives us possibilities and the list will never end!So, send your special moments and let us pull togetherLong days will seem much shorter and the storms we’ll try to weather. Words: Gem’s ChoiceThis month’s 12 Months of Kindness initiative, run and led by the UK GGA team, iscalled ‘A Collection of Tens’. It is focused on sharing a few of our favourite things, which is so important in promoting our truest self, being proud of who we really are andshining outwardly into the world. By radiating the most vulnerable and truest parts of our SELF, we are allowing others tosee our light, feel our light and ultimately- be touched by our light. Anything that bringsus happiness is worth sharing because other people may feel the same way. We couldbe helping to shift somebody out of a dark place just by shining our light upon them. Byshowing others a ‘way’ towards the ‘light’ we can offer a glimmer of hope, we can offerfaith in a brighter future, and we can offer our love to see someone through adversityand life’s unexpected challenges. I hope these words can mean as much to you as they do to me, and I would love toknow what your favourite ‘bunch of words’ are.
